Biography

Born in Inverness, Nova Scotia. Barrie Fraser grew up on a small farm in East Lake Ainslie. He attended Hamilton School, Kirkwood, East Lake Ainslie, and Inverness High School. Later he attended the Nova Scotia College of Art from 1967 to 1969, plus a three month summer course in the early 1970's. He wrote and illustrated three columns (You'll See It Outdoors, Sketchbook Meditations, and The Pursuit of Art) for the Inverness Oran over the past twenty years. As well, he wrote and illustrated articles for the Nova Scotian and The Atlantic Advocate. He illustrated three Gaelic text books for the Gaelic College, St. Anne's, Nova Scotia. He continues to live and work in East Lake Ainslie where he eaches numerous evening and private art classes and owns and operates the Kirkwood Studio and Gallery in East Lake Ainslie.

Awards and Accomplishments

- Commission by the Gaelic College to do a series of historical paintings (8) and ink drawings (4). The works, which were unveiled by Premier John Savage, are on permanent display in The Great Hall of the Clans, the Gaclic College. The paintings and drawings, which focus on Rev. Norman MacLeod and the exodus he led to New Zealand, also illustrate the book To the Ends of the Earth written by Neil Robinson of New Zealand, and published in 1997.
- An exhibit on his hockey art was held at the St. Francis Xavier Gallery, Antigontsh from Feb.14 to Mar.17, 1996.
- Commissioned to do a portrait of Danny Gallivan for the Danny Gallivan Memorial Scholarship Fund. A print of the portrait was presented to Senator Hartland Molson on an April. 1997. broadcast of Hockey Night in Canada.

Recent Exhibitions and Shows

- Held an exhibit 'The Eternal in the Temporal' at University College of Cape Breton Act Gallery, Feb. 2 to Mar. 31, 2000. Featured watercolour paintings of an old farm house in Twin Rock Valley. N.S.
